Jane Birkin, a British singer and actress who rose to popularity in France, passed away on Sunday at the age of 76, according to reports cited by CNN affiliate BFMTV.
Birkin came to her adopted country at the age of just 20 and lived there for nearly six decades while being in the public eye. She was recognised as the nation of France’s favourite “anglaise.”
When Birkin fell in love with French actor and singer Serge Gainsbourg not long after arriving in Paris, she shot to prominence.
Gainsbourg is approximately 20 years older than Birkin, and the two rapidly captured the attention of the general public. The duo frequently worked together professionally, most notably when they sang together on the sensual duet “Je t’aime… moi non plus,” whose explicit lyrics led to the song’s prohibition in several countries
Although the exact reason of Birkin’s passing is unknown, she had been in poor health recently and had suffered a stroke in 2021. One of the actress’ final public appearances before her passing was at the premiere of the documentary “Jane by Charlotte,” which explores her bond with her daughter Charlotte.
