She’s creepy and she’s kooky, mysterious and spooky … and she’s Latinx. Netflix is serving the representation with its first look at “Wednesday” — the streaming service’s series about the Addams family that’s centered on the clan’s death-obsessed daughter during her high school days.
Netflix describes the eight-episode series as a “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery” with a coming-of-age bent that will uncover new layers of the Addams family’s daughter.
“Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore,” per the official summary.
The show’s cast boasts some pretty big names. Catherine Zeta-Jones will play the macabre-loving family’s matriarch, Morticia, and Luis Guzmán will play patriarch Gomez. The main cast of the show includes Gwendoline Christie and Thora Birch and Christina Ricci.

Since it's Netflix there probably will be sex scenes with Thing. Teen porn is their specialty.

Only wankers use the term Latinx.
Also, Raul Julia was Latin.

I don't know why the family or at least half the family couldn't be Latin. The surname is Adams, yes, but the father has always been Gomez and the name Morticia isn't a real name, but if it were, it would be a Latin-adjacent name that very well could be Hispanic.
This to me is like when Riverdale made Veronica's family Spanish and made Reggie Asian. I was thrown by the casting choices and my knee-jerk reaction was to think it was overly woke, but then I revisited the old comics and realized there was no reason Veronica by her looks couldn't be Latina and Reggie couldn't be Asian. A Black Betty or Archie would have been a departure, but Veronica and Reggie both had jet-black hair and black eyes and now lookkng at decades-old comics, they could have been nonwhite as they were drawn and I just assumed they were all white. I find that interesting.

R2, Yes indeed. I had the privilege of profiling his son for a project while we were in college.

There was a series of short episodes on YouTube called "Adult Wednesday Addams". It was miles better than this. The woman who created the episodes was forced to remove them.

Good Lord, Tim Burton is working on a limited series for Netflix. WTF happened to his career?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 9, 2022 12:36 PM |
[quote] He is depicted as being of Castilian extraction and Spanish ancestry, which was first brought up in "Art and the Addams Family" on December 18, 1964. John Astin had long sessions with Addams and series producer David Levy, who gave him free rein in developing the character. Enlarging on Addams' description of Gomez as a Latin lover type, Astin suggested the eye-rolling, pencil moustache, and ardent devotion to Morticia.
People from Spain are considered Hispanic (speak Spanish) and Latin in the sense of speaking a Romance language, but not Latinx in the sense of being from Latin America.

Elvira is the original "adult Wednesday Addams."

Gomez is short and lusty. He gives me butch drag king vibes. He should be played by Alex Borstein.

Gomez was not originally conceived as Latin by Charles Addams. That was created for the 1960s TV show. In fact, the entire family had no first names during the comic strip's first three decades of existence, until the TV show. They were simply known collectively as the Addams Family. Also, Morticia was descended from victims of the Salem Witch Trials.

R11 OK, but the TV show is most people's only association with the Addams Family, and in it, Gomez was Gomez. It's entertainment, not a biological being, and there's no genetic ancestry involved to make a claim that because the comic character wasn't described as Spanish, the pop culture figure of Gomez Addams isn't of Spanish ancestry.

CZJ should play Wednesday!

R14 I don't think Catherine could pull off playing someone so mature and aged as Wednesday Addams.

As drawn in the New Yorker, I always figured "Gomez" was a Peter Lorre Central European.

IMO Catherine Zeta Jones is mesmerizing as Morticia (I know, Mary!). She brings such gravitas to the scenes when being crushed by how Wednesday rejects every attempt of her mother trying to reason with her.
I love how the show manages to make Wednesday a rebellious teen without compromising her established character.

My family started watching it so i caught a few minutes of an episode and i cringed when Wednesday used the word mansplaining. Morticia and Gomez are off too. I really don't like the way they talk.

I was home from work unwell and binged it. Loved it! Some random thoughts/ observations:
Picked who the beast was from episode 1 (won't spoil it for you by naming them).
The guy playing Young Gomez is muy caliente.
CZJ is atrocious compared to Anjelica Huston, but she did look very attractive.
I did not care for their portrayal of Gomez - they turned him into a pudgy little fool.
Gwendolen Christie was sublime.
Loved Wednesday's room mate Enid, great little character.
The guy playing Xavier reminds me of Joan Cusack. Same gangly features and lisping voice.
Jenna Ortega is simply stunning. Her Wednesday was at times a little irritating, but overall she absolutely killed it.
What was the point of the storyline with Bianca's mum? It went nowhere.
I want a pet Thing.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 25, 2022 1:12 PM |
I liked it a lot, but definitely didn't love it. Ultimately, it just seemed like someone's fanfic about Wednesday attending Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, not really something about the Addams Family. I think what drew me in was just that Jenny Ortega was so great. Actually, really all of the kids, especially Enid. We all saw the hug between Wednesday and Enid coming from a mile away, but they sold it. I'm surprised Emma Myers hasn't been in more stuff. She seemed very familiar and she's terrific.
Honestly, my biggest complaint is probably CZJ. I like her, and she certainly looked the part, but she didn't have Angelica Huston's understanding of who Morticia is. Christina Ricci was great in the role she played, but she'd have been so much better.

Indeed, but I like Luis Guzman a lot more than I expected. Atrocious wig aside.

I kept going back and forth. It seemed too obvious to be the pair that Wednesday initially suspected, but I also didn't think some kind of double twist was out of the question.
I was disappointed that they didn't find a use for the theme song, but I heard one of the producers talking about it on a podcast, and apparently the estate of Vic Mizzy is incredibly zealous about licensing it. He said they had an easier time getting permission for "Paint It Black."

LOL at what one has to do to gain entrance to the secret society's HQ.
Gwendolyn was amazing in this. Very regal and hard to figure out (is she a villain or very protective of the school?).
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 25, 2022 4:06 PM |
I loved her as Wednesday. She is so cute and was killing it. I thought the whole cast was great, Gomez excepted. Guzman is too New York Puerto Rican to pull off Gomez.
Called the villain in the first episode, but it was still a fun ride. You’re not in it for the plot. It’s a knock off Hogwarts with a very mild whodunnit tacked in.
Loved Gwendolyn in her role. Would watch another season.

She's the only good actress in this abominable series. There might be others, but I barely made it through Ep. 1. Zeta-Jones is horrid, absolutely horrid as Morticia, playing her like some simpering sexpot, and the actor playing Gomez turns him into a doughy, greasy lech. Ugh Tim Burton needs to go away. I hate his over-cartoonification of stories, which has gotten worse over the years. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

"For the love of God, why didn't they have Christina Ricci play Morticia?"
Too short.
There was a nice passing of the torch moment in the series that I appreciated between Ricci and Ortega.
I really love Gwendoline Christie in this! She dolls up splendidly. I would love to see her in an erotic thriller.
I am at the midway point and I am enjoying it. I do miss Paul Rudnik's voice in the series though. Some of the one liners in the movies were brilliant.
And, Jenna Ortega is splendid.

Nor do most Latinos. But try telling that to the "woke"/Left/SJWs (who are mostly white).
as of Pew 2020 survey, 76% of Latinos never heard of it, 20% have heard but do not use it. ONLY 3% USE IT!!! (probbly all from ivy league/liberal arts colleges).

It had possibilities but ultimately surrendered to lazy writing and an amalgamation of teen tv tropes randomly thrown together with no concept of what their targeted age demographic was.
the hyde transformation was... ugh.
The dialogue was very fanfic level.

Just finished it. Agree with all of the good points mentioned here, I’m onboard for season 2. The ever present devotion between Gomez and “Tish” that has always been a part of the Addams, was done very well (and explained very well) in this new adaptation. Great all-around.
